KITCHENER, Ont. – (December 5, 2016) – Kitchener City Hall is coming to life this holiday season in a brilliant display of projection mapping. The show is Christie’s gift to the city and celebrates the holiday season through music and video projection mapped onto the façade of Kitchener City Hall.
“We’re so fortunate that the City of Kitchener graciously let us use the City Hall buildings as an enormous canvas on which to share this gift with the community,” says Ihor Stech, chief operating officer, Christie Canada. “Christie has thrived in the Kitchener-Waterloo Region and we wanted to take this opportunity to give back. We hope that everyone will enjoy the holiday show as much as we enjoyed bringing it to life.”
Stech adds, “Not everyone is as fortunate as we are, and the Christmas season can highlight that fact. We want to encourage everyone to consider a $5 donation to Family and Children’s Services of Waterloo Region by texting TREE to 30333. Let’s all support our friends and neighbours in the region.”
The projection mapping display, called “A Holiday Greeting Card to the Community” will run every evening on the hour from 7:00 to 10:05 p.m. starting December 17 and continuing to December 31, with the exception of December 24 and December 25.
Join the community for the official launch party on Dec. 17 from 6-10 p.m. at City Hall. Enjoy entertainment and skating on Carl Zehr Square. Mayor Berry Vrbanovic and Gerry Remers, former president of Christie Digital, will provide brief remarks at 6:15 p.m. Be the first to view the stunning light show at 6:30 p.m. before the nightly schedule resumes from 7-10:05 p.m.
“This is an incredible opportunity for residents to see a homegrown example of technological innovation by a local success story like Christie,” says Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “We are celebrating the holiday season in a way that is truly unique to our region – with a spectacular display of world-renowned technology and talent. Come out and enjoy this fun experience for the whole family in downtown Kitchener over the holidays.”
“One of the most exciting things at Christie is how we are making technology platforms to enhance the way in which we tell stories,” says Roy Anthony, senior product developer, Christie. “We are making solutions that take into consideration the physicality of buildings like City Hall and wrap it with computer generated art and imagery, creating an opportunity to convey a much broader range of stories versus what would be possible without the solutions we are creating here within Waterloo Region.”
The display is the culmination of Christie’s technology and of hundreds of hours of consulting, design and installation work of the Christie team resulting in animated projected holiday segments custom tailored to fit and highlight three sides of the City Hall buildings and the tower, which the community will not want to miss.
