Christie J Series and Pandoras Box light up Cali Cathedral
Posted on Thursday, February 2, 2017

Bogotá, Colombia - (February 2, 2017) - Once again Christie® 3DLP technology projectors have proven why they are the benchmark for large-format projections in live events. Six Christie Roadster HD20K-J projectors, controlled by the Christie Pandoras Box media server, were instrumental in the projection mapping on the façade of the Cathedral of San Pedro Apóstol, Cali (Colombia), a jewel of the city’s architectural heritage.

The mapping, conceived as part of the annual Christmas celebrations organized by the local city council, was assigned to Vinilo Lab, which looked after all the technical aspects and programming of the projection.

The façade of the cathedral, measuring 23 meters wide by 27 high, was used as a screen to showcase the wealth of the region’s sweets and candies —hence Dulce Navidad or Sweet Christmas, the concept for this year’s festival— for which it is celebrated. The projections were screened in six shows daily almost every day during December.

A team of over 20 professionals, comprising graphic designers, social communicators, publicists, architects and engineers, worked for more than six months on creating the show. To this end, they relied on the best available video and audio technology, including the Christie projectors, which delivered a total of 120,000 lumens.

The projectors were located at a throw distance of 40 metres from the façade on three, six-meter high scaffolding towers, operating at a resolution of 3840 x 3240. The projectors’ Christie Twist™ module proved critical in monitoring and color correcting. “As always, the performance of the Roadsters was superb, specifically their color matching capabilities, which were pitch perfect across the whole mapping,” explained Eduardo Ortega, CEO of Vinilo Lab.

The Christie Roadster J Series projectors are built to withstand the busy life and stress that rental equipment for live shows must endure, and to ensure delivery of over 20,000 lumens of rich, saturated colors. In fact, they were designed with purpose-built features for the rental and staging market, with built-in handles, an improved airflow system and multiple rigging points.

The multi-award winning Christie Pandoras Box media servers were used to drive the projectors and synchronize all the action. Eduardo Ortega described Pandoras Box as “…ideal for live events because it affords unsurpassed creativity and flexibility. Its warping feature was particularly useful for this event, given the depth of the church’s columns, windows and balconies.”

He went on to add that “in addition, we had a few last-minute sponsors who delivered their logos on the very same day as the first projection, but thanks to Pandoras Box real-time capacity, we were able to include them without affecting the tight deadlines.”

The Pandoras Box system is a complete ready-to-use and affordable solution, which combines to perfection the latest rendering technology with intuitive media and show control. Pivotal in some of the world’s most spectacular multimedia presentations, it is the ideal choice for any live event, projection mapping or multimedia shows. Flexible and easy to use, it can be set up as a standalone playback device, network playback client or used in console mode for direct DMX Control.
